Web Design Examples - Excel Sports

Excel Sports was a site I designed and developed for a client while working with Bigmouthmedia. They run sports training camps for children during the school holidays and had an existing site but wanted to redesign it as it was rather dark and had small low-resolution photographs. However they wanted to retain their logo as it was used on their latest advertising leaflets and was considered satisfactory.

Excel SportsThe first task was to take the colour scheme of the logo and use it as the basis of a new brighter colour scheme that would better indicate the fun that the kids have on their courses. The Royal Blue body colour was richer than the original Navy and gave a good background on which to display photographs. These were the second and probably most important task, and I sifted through as many photos as Excel could supply looking for pictures that were fun, were representative of the different activities they had on offer, and were sharp and capable of being adapted.

It became apparent that some activities were much better represented than others and that prompted the idea of using a montage along the top so that there would always be some images on every page and an immediate impression would be given of the range of sports going on.

The site had quite a lot of pages and needed to be accessible to a wide age range so a simple and prominent left side menu system was chosen with a fly-out on items where subsections made sense. This was the same fast CSS and layer based system that I had developed for the Edinburgh Chess Club site.

A bit of editing to adapt some of the existing brochure text for the web and we were well on the way to a vibrant site that would be attractive to the children and informative to their parents.
